Codex Ashes and Snow

The Rolex Institute is pleased to announce the launch of Codex Ashes and Snow by Canadian photographer Gregory Colbert, and proudly continues the long Rolex tradition of honouring individuals who make a meaningful contribution to the world in which we live.

Rolex supports those whose indomitable spirit compels them to make a difference in the realms of science, technology, exploration, the environment, and cultural heritage. Artist Gregory Colbert exemplifies the talent, quality, and achievement that Rolex seeks to recognize.

Codex Ashes and Snow is a celebration of the living masterpieces of nature. Bound in original book covers from the 17th century, Codex Ashes and Snow is a never-ending bestiary—a poem, a field study, a collection of photographs, artefacts and letters—that reminds us that the greatest artist of all is nature itself.

Since 1992 photographer and filmmaker Gregory Colbert has collaborated with more than 40 species around the world to create a 21st-century bestiary. These images attempt to express the world not only through human eyes, but also through the eyes of a whale, an elephant, a manatee, a meerkat, a cheetah, or an orangutan.
